Surfer’s funeral

This movie is being dedicated in memory of “Pierre Du Plesis” a big wave rider in Cape Town, who passed away unexpectedly, The surf community of Cape Town celebrated his life, and paid their last respects at Long Beach, an act of love and respect as hundreds of surfers both old and young, paddled into the deep and formed a circle and paid their last respects to a friend, who spent many years riding PERFECT WAVES, …we will remember him fondly, Surfers, uniquely remember those who are special by taking a wreath to sea, and sharing together in the water before paddling in

Crayfish Factory

This is one of the most commonly ridden big wave spots in Cape Town, this is probably Cape Town’s scariest waves, which breaks when it deems fit to grace us with its power.
Don’t get caught inside, several near death experiences have occurred here, in fact just about every-one who has surfed here will recount a tale of terror!!!!
The most common tale is being pitted on takeoff and being mercilessly pounded into the kelp and held down for dark swirling eons with no sign of let up as 12footer after 12 footer smash into the ledge churning you underwater giving you a close-up inspection of the rocks and a tour of the reef below, and when its had its way with you and you about to explode, you get spat out into a channel way down off the point, glad to be alive…

Dungeons

This place needs serious bravery, the water is freezing cold, its right next to a seal colony and guess what? , …..there are plenty of sharks around that prey on the seals??
The wave folds over a shallow reef section, the lip is often big enough to take your head off, …,
The RED BULL BIG WAVE AFRICA takes place at Dungeons annually, and what we do know is “there will be drama, danger, cheering spectators and stressing competitors.”
Dungeons is a “monster” that sleeps beneath the cliffs of the Sentinal at the mouth of Hout Bay, it has the ability to awake and produce the biggest waves in Africa.

Kalk Bay

Wow, here you cut your teeth, on reef surfing. The wave just pops up and creates a wall and barrel, to get to the spot you need to either cross the railway line (hole in the fence manoeuvre) and hop down onto a small beach, and clamber over the rocks and jump into the water and follow a small sand channel between the rocks and get to the back and await a quick take off that bites if you come off!!!

Long Beach

A very popular surf spot, which is almost always crowded. Works on a SW wind, and on a good day, which is fairly often, one can have fun waves in the icy cold water. The swell has to bend almost doing a U Turn to reach this North facing break, the refraction focuses clean lines towards the beach that result in left breaking peaks that run for 40 metres before ending on a shore break which closes out.
